Whether you’re unemployed or just looking for a new job, chances are that you are constantly tweeking your resume and submitting it to various people. As a Staffing agency we see hundreds of resumes a day, all with various jargon that people think will help set them apart from each other often to no avail.
Buzzwords can only do so much in today’s society. If you are looking for a job, here’s some thoughts on buzzwords that you can eliminate from your resume starting today.
Superlatives – Calling yourself world-class or cutting edge, doesn’t mean anything to a recruiter, HR person, or staffing agency. We know that you’re just trying to fatten your resume up. You don’t need to puff it up any more than you do. Instead add actual stats and sales numbers, that will allow us to see what you are doing.
Acronyms – So you were a member of TIMA or ICA. That’s great but what exactly does that mean? Often times acronyms get lost in the hustle and bustle of the world and can often be lost by the person reading the resume if he or she doesn’t understand what they are.
Generalities – You’re a team player or hardworking, well that’s great but chances are if you get the chance for the interview you’re already believed that you were. Instead you should use descriptors on why you are what you state you are.
Adjectives – You’re disciplined, proactive, and a professional great…but what does that really say about you? Adjectives can mean great things but they are often subjective and often mean something different to everyone else.
Remember by eliminating these words you can help a staffing team help you sooner rather than later.
