Recruiting and Hiring Tips for your Small Business

So you’re a small business and your asking yourself, “how do I compete with bigger companies for top talent?”  Well, you’re in luck, because believe it or not, small businesses are in demand.  However, these new recruits aren’t going to be lining up at your door, resume in hand.  But you can influence their destiny.

Go Back To School

A great way to recruit is to start a relationship with a local college or Staffing Agency.  Each year, these institutions send future personnel out into the job market for the first time. By building a relationship with local colleges and Staffing Agencies you can connect with new job applicants motivated to get their feet wet year after year.

Network, Network, Network

Networking is a great way to survey and find talented recruits.  Participating in professional associations and conferences gives your organization the opportunity to meet new people who are involved and already interested in your specific industry.   Advertising via professional association websites can also be an effective way to recruit talented people.

Company Culture

Company culture has a huge effect on what types of job applicants seek out your organization.  You want potential employees to know that the work environment you facilitate is virtuous.  Providing an atmosphere that your current employees admire can enhance this idea.  In turn they will spread the word that your small business is a great place to work, thus boosting moral and enhancing employee retention.

Incentives also help to boost your company culture.  Some recruits are all about the money.  This doesn’t mean you should increase salaries, but you should keep in mind that many recruits will take a less appealing job if they are offered just a little more money or better benefits.

Take Away

So yes, you can compete with larger companies for top talent.   The two things that are essential to this process is connecting with potential employees and communicating the positive aspects about your organizations.  Ask for some information from a Staffing Agency or a local university’s career services department, or research some networking events in your area if you’d like to add a new dimension to your current hiring strategy.
